Can You Hear Me Now? Delta Relents

Cell Phones, Other Devices Now Allowed on Taxi-In

Delta, the nation's #2 airline (in terms of passengers carried) has joined several other airlines in allowing customers, including those traveling on Song, Delta Shuttle and Delta Connection carriers, use of certain 'Portable Electronic Devices' on taxi-in to the gate on Delta domestic flights in the United States. This rule change takes effect Friday, August 15, 2003.

The hand-held electronic devices allowed with this policy change include:

  • cellular telephones
  • one and two-way pagers
  • Personal Digital Assistants (Palm Pilots, etc.)
  • hand-held games
  • hand-held Global Positioning Satellite receivers
However,

The new policy does not apply to passengers on Embraer Brasilia turboprops (right), which are operated by Delta Connection carrier SkyWest Airlines. The use of personal computers still will be prohibited during taxi in.

"Delta customers want to use their travel time more productively," said Patrice Miles, Delta's vice president of Consumer Marketing. "This change will allow our customers to use an extensive list of devices for business or entertainment for a longer time while onboard the aircraft."

Delta also will continue to allow the use of cell phones and pagers prior to departure while the aircraft doors are open.
