Following a flight of just over eight months, Curiosity landed on Mars in the very early morning hours -- Eastern time --- Monday near the foot of a mountain three miles tall and 96 miles in diameter inside Gale Crater.
During a nearly two-year prime mission, the rover will investigate whether the region ever offered conditions favorable for microbial life. "The Seven Minutes of Terror has turned into the Seven Minutes of Triumph," said NASA Associate Administrator for Science John Grunsfeld. After 26 years of continuous service on the EAA Board of Directors, Louie Andrew announced his retirement on August 3, 2012. For the past year Andrew served as Chairman of the Board. Change is also coming at the top of Glasair where after an 11 year run, Mikael Via is resigning as president now that the plane maker is being sold to a Chinese entity.
