Two Injured In DA20 Downing Near Pueblo

Aircraft Impacted Short Of The Runway

A flight instructor and student pilot were injured late Monday morning when their Diamond DA20-C1 impacted short of the runway while attempting to land at Pueblo Memorial Airport (PUB).

The Pueblo Chieftain reports the aircraft (type shown above) was practicing touch-and-goes when the aircraft landed short of the runway threshold, and tumbled down a ravine. The aircraft came to rest inverted, on its forward-opening canopy.

The student pilot was able to free himself from the plane, but rescue workers labored for over half an hour to free the instructor -- removing the plane's wing, engine and firewall so the trapped pilot could be removed.

Pueblo Fire Department spokesman Woody Percival said one of the men was airlifted to St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, while the second was taken by ambulance to Parkview Medical Center. The identities of the men weren't released, and their conditions were unknown as of Tuesday morning.

The aircraft was owned by Colorado Springs-based Doss Aviation, which was contracted in March 2006 by the US Air Force to provide initial ab-initio flight training for cadets at the US Air Force Academy.

The FAA and USAF will investigate the accident.
