Noise Complaint Nearly Grounds Female Spitfire Pilot

But Vets And Fans Petition To Keep Her Flying

The airplane is thought to be only one of two airworthy two-place Spitfires in the UK, and its pilot is a 58 year old woman who learned to fly the airplane after her husband, who had restored it, was killed in an automobile accident in 1988.

Carolyn Grace reportedly flies the unique airplane at demonstrations and air shows all over the UK from her home airfield in Rendlesham, Suffolk. But she was nearly grounded when a single person complained that the noise from the airplane's Merlin engine "ruined the peace and quite of the English countryside," according to the London Daily Mail.

But in answer to that single complaint, thousands of fans have reportedly signed a petition to keep Grace and her Spitfire flying. The paper reports 3,411 signatures on the petition, along with over 200 e-mails and nearly two dozen hand-written letters.

Grace said the outpouring of support is reflective of the patriotism of the people of Suffolk.
