Airman Fatally Injured October 5 Identified

One Of Six Aboard An Aircraft Involved In Drug Interdiction, Two Survive

The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has identified an airman who was fatally injured when a contracted DH-8 airplane went down near the border between Colombia and Panama, resulting in the fatal injury of all on board.

The service member was identified as Master Sgt. Martin Gonzales. A SOUTHCOM news release said two American contractors and a Panamanian Air-Naval lieutenant were also killed. Two other American contractors were rescued by the Colombian military and transported to a hospital in Bogota, according to airforcenews.com

“Our hearts remain with the families of the men who lost their lives in this tragic crash,” Marine Gen. John Kelly, SOUTHCOM commander, said in the news release “It is a terrible tragedy, but we remain committed to finding out what happened and hopefully bring some sort of peace to the families.”
