Tibbets Returns To The Sky

Enola Gay Pilot Flies Allied Re-Enactment On 90th Birthday

Retired Air Force General Paul Tibbets, who commanded history's first atomic bombing mission over Hiroshima, Japan, at the twilight of World War II, plans to be back in the air this spring. On his 90th birthday, he'll be in a Boeing B-17 commemorating "Mission Bolero."

The operation began on June 15, 1942, and involved 49 B-17s, 80 P-38s, and 52 C-47 aircraft to provide significant air support in England. Tibbets, who was then a major, flew a B-17 to help lead the P-38s that lacked the long-range navigational equipment for the mission.

Later this month, on February 18 and 19, Tibbets will be reunited with four original members of his crew at Atlanta's Dekalb-Peachtree Airport and fly formation with a P-38 called "Glacier Girl."

In 1992, the P-38 was pulled from the ice in Greenland and eventually restored to flying condition.
