CABAA Gets The FAA In Their Corner

FAA Cooperates With Local Operators

The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) announced they've made vital progress in conjunction with the FAA to reduce low altitude flying over Lake Michigan. CABAA says this is a problem for operations into the satellite airports of Chicago.

Currently, business aircraft approaching from the east are routed over Lake Michigan at 4,000 feet to avoid interfering with airline traffic into O'Hare. The organization says this burns additional fuel, places aircraft into an increased traffic environment, and creates unfavorable flying conditions.

The association's Air Traffic Control committee met with the Chicago TRACON, Chicago Center and the FAA's Midwest Tactical Operation in Des Plaines. Officials say they recognize the potential safety hazard and are working out the details of a plan. A procedure allowing airplanes to cross the Northbrook, IL VOR (OBK) at 14,000 feet could be approved this month.

The committee is also working with the FAA to allow aircraft approaching from the south to remain at a higher altitude while transitioning to northern satellite airports. Another possibility is to "piggyback" approaches into O'Hare or Midway.

CABAA is pleased with the progress made so far, and is committed to assist the FAA in making the Chicago airspace safer and more efficient. CABAA also meets monthly to network, share experiences, and educate its members.
