Shriners Fly-In Breakfast Raises Money For Hospitals

2000 Flew Or Drove In For Annual Indiana Event

Mercury Aviation at Fort Wayne International Airport in Indiana hosted the annual Shriners Fly-In Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, with proceeds going to benefit Shriners Children's Hospitals.

The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette reports that the event has been one of the Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine's main fundraiser for 20 years. A minimum donation of $5 was good for eggs, sausage, ham, pancakes, hash browns, toast and a drink. Dave Yarde, the Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine potentate, said about 25 airplanes brought 75 of the 2000 people attending the event. “It’s just an established event that people look forward to every year,” Yarde said.

Yarde told the paper that the Shriners have 22 hospitals nationwide that treat  children who suffer from crippling conditions or burns free of charge. The total annual budget for all those hospitals is about $825 million, he said.
