Unhappy Ending: Missing Plane Found In New Jersey

Pilot Lost In Mishap

The wreckage of a Cessna 182 missing since Sunday morning was found Thursday evening just four miles from the New Jersey airfield where it departed. The pilot -- the only person on board -- did not survive, authorities said.

The debris was spotted in a heavily-wooded, rugged area in Hardyston Township,NJ. It was there at around 0730 Sunday morning 58-year old Roland Anthony Melanson's 182 disappeared from radar two minutes after take-off. He was headed for Sikorsky Field in Stratford, CT.

Melanson's disappearance sparked a massive search effort. Helicopters equipped with FLIR sensors, boats, jeeps and search teams on foot scoured the woods where he was thought to have gone down.

It was one of two searches ANN reported on in real-time this week. In the other case, an experimental helicopter with two on board went down in Atlantic County, NJ. Both people on board were lost.
