Woman Injured By Prop In Sweden

Witnesses Say She Walked Toward Plane After Arrival

A woman described as being in her 70s, but otherwise unidentified, is reported hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after walking into the propeller of an idling aircraft at Viared's air field outside Borås, in southern Sweden Saturday. There was no information immediately available on the aircraft type.

The Local, an English language Swedish news website, reported only that the woman was standing on the ground, waiting to meet friends arriving on a private plane. Despite clear markings directing passengers away from dangerous areas, she reportedly approached the plane and walked into the prop arc.

Börje Gustavsson, vice chairman of a local flying association which operates the air field, told the new agency TT, "When you turn off the motor, you follow a check list, and at that time the pilot might not have full attention to what's happening outside the plane. I saw out of the corner of my eye that someone came in diagonally from left towards the plane, and walked right into the propeller."

The woman reportedly received emergency treatment on the scene from a doctor who is a member of the flying association. Local police are expected to turn their investigation over to the Swedish Accident Investigation Board.
