Airman Deployed To Antarctica Dies Of Natural Causes

Was Attached To The 109th Airlift Wing Of The New York Air National Guard

A 37-year-old airman from New York State has died on deployment to Antarctica.

The Air Force Times reports that, according to an online obituary, Staff Sgt. George Girtler of the 109th Airlift Wing at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Schenectady, New York died January 11 of a pulmonary embolism while participating in Operation Deep Freeze.

“We are deeply saddened losing one of our own on the ice,” Col. Christian Sander, vice commander of the 109th, said in a Pacific Air Forces news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Girtler’s family and loved ones. We are grieving together as a wing and community.”

Girtler was serving as an Aircraft Electrical and Environmental specialist at McMurdo with the 139th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, according to the release.
