Aero-TV: PlaneTags and the Business of Resurrection

Very Cool and Highly Collectable

An offshoot of MotoArt, the first and only concern to handcraft one-of-a-kind articles of furniture from the salvaged structures and components of decommissioned aircraft, PlaneTags is an ever-broadening line of aviation mementos fashioned—hand-cut, stamped, shaped, and individually etched—from the skins of retired aircraft.

Cognizant of the innumerable stories preserved figuratively and literally throughout the forlorn carcasses of once-proud aircraft relegated to the world’s boneyards, PlaneTags’s personnel scour the globe in perpetuity, seeking out and salvaging vintage military and commercial aircraft.

Once acquired, PlaneTags workers cut sections from the salvaged aircraft, taking care to preserve the original skin, paint, patina, and wear thereof. The fuselage sections are conveyed to the company’s Torrance, California workshop, where they’re cleaned and hand-stamped into small, ovular tags—each about the size of a large spoon-type fishing lure. Thereafter, the company’s artisans laser-etch each tag with the donor aircraft’s make, model, tail-number, and spec outline. The keepsakes are individually numbered within a limited series germane to the aircraft of which they were once part. Following a rigorous inspection process, PlaneTags are hand-attached to descriptive cards imprinted with the histories of the aircraft from which they respectively derive.

In the most straightforward sense, PlaneTags immortalize aircraft which, in life, traversed the globe, alternately connecting and defending the world’s people and nations. The company’s customers, each in accordance to the degree with which he reveres, accepts, or merely tolerates aviation and its rich history, put the mementos to varying uses. Some compile lovingly-curated collections comprising numerous aircraft. Others ply their PlaneTags to more prosaic ends—the likes of keychains, luggage tags, or even dog-collar IDs.
