Water-Balloon Bombing Lands Non-Rated Pilot In Hot... Water

Single Engine Aircraft Dropped Water Balloons On Classic Car Festival

A 21-year old man is in hot water with authorities in Logan City, UT, after police say he used a single-engine aircraft to bomb a crowded parking lot... with water balloons.

It happened late Saturday night at the Cruise-In, a local festival in Logan. Authorities say the aircraft, flying without running lights, made at least two passes over the Smith's Marketplace parking lot, which was full of hundreds of cars and people participating in the Cruise-In.

And dropped water balloons.

Police, certain it was a local flight, headed out to Logan-Cache Airport and had a little chat with the unidentified young man. Investigators told the Logan Herald-Journal the young man first said he was repairing emergency beacons at the airport. But after a quick check with the FAA, officers found out no such repairs are conducted at night.

Police said the young man later admitted to flying the aircraft -- even though he doesn't have a rating.

He won't be charged by local law enforcement officers, though. Instead, the case will be investigated by the FAA.

Now he's really in trouble.

"We'll look into this kind of stuff," Logan City Police Lt. Rod Peterson told the Herald-Journal "We just want to let people know that you can get caught for doing that kind of stuff."
