Vintage Jet Down During Madrid, Spain Air Show

Aircraft Exploded In A Fireball After Impact

An accident at the Madrid Air Show Sunday resulted in the fatal injury of the pilot of an HA-200 Saeta aircraft which went down during its demonstration. The pilot had initially survived the accident but was severely burned and died of his injuries at a Madrid hospital.

The accident occurred at Cuatro Vientos airfield. The HA-200 was built in the 1950s, according to a report from the Associated Press. It was one of the first jets to be manufactured in Spain. The pilot, 35-year-old Ladislao Tejedor Romero, was said to have been an experienced jet pilot, according to a spokesman for Spain's Ministry of Defense.

The aircraft had initially been built as a trainer, but was later adapted for attack missions. Witnesses said the plane was in a dive and impacted buildings. The Europa Press news agency said that the pilot was the only fatality from the accident, but a rescue worker was treated for burns and a second suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene. A third person, thought to be the pilot's father, reportedly suffered from an anxiety attack and was taken to a hospital.
