Midwestern Mom Sends S&P A Message

Banner Towed Over Manhattan Was Meant For A Broader Audience

A St. Louis, Missouri banker who's also a mom felt the need to express her displeasure over the Standard & Poors downgrade of the U.S. credit rating with the powers-that-be. So she hired a company to tow a banner over New York City Tuesday, and the stunt certainly attracted some attention.

"Thanks For The Downgrade: You Should All Be Fired" the banner read. Folks on Wall Street enjoying lunch Tuesday made the banner all the rage of Twitter for a time Tuesday.

But the St. Louis mom, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Fortune that she originally wanted to fly the banner over Washington, D.C. ... with the same message. But she "learned that you can't do that." She blames the politicians in Washington for the financial problems in which the U.S. finds its self.

So, with D.C. out, she chose the next most obvious city. According to the New York Daily News, Matthew Applegate, a pilot for Aerial Sign North in New Jersey which charges $1,000 for such a flight, said he had no involvement in the message other than to fly it behind his plane.

He was, however, grateful for the free advertising.
