U.S. Helicopter Confirmed Down In Afghanistan

Details On Casualties Have Not Been Released

A U.S. Black Hawk helicopter on a mission to evacuate Afghan police officers wounded during a suicide attack in Helmund Province has gone down in bad weather, according to NATO officials.

The New York Times reports that the helo went down around 2100 local time in the Garmsir district of the province. Local Afghan officials said that four Americans had been fatally injured when the helicopter went down, but those casualties have not been officially confirmed.

District Governor Mohammad Fahim Gorbati told reporters that the aircraft was on its way to pick up as many as seven police officers who had been wounded in a suicide attack on a checkpoint and transport them to a hospital nearby. Four other police officers had been killed in the attack.

A Taliban spokesman said that insurgents had shot down the helicopter. While the aircraft was flying in bad weather, CNN reports that one U.S. military official said "We cannot yet rule out enemy action." (File Photo)
