TKS Ice Protection Systems Going Green

Will Work With Kilfrost To Certify Green Icing Fluid

By Chris Batcheller

CAV Aerospace, with 22 years experience with icing protection systems, announced today that they are working with Kilfrost to bring an eco-friendly icing fluid to the market.  This is the “next chapter” according to the company, and it believes because of current political reasons that this product will be very important.

Kilfrost Incorporated is developing the eco friendly goo. It’s manufactured from feed corn where it’s fermented to extract glucose.  The glucose is then shipped to Kilfrost’s manufacturing facilities where it is turned into Type I and Type IV deicing fluid.  Compared to the current fluid, the new fluid reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 40%, and is a renewable, sustainable product.   It’s biodegradable, and in seven days, 90% of the fluid is completely biodegraded.

CAV Aerospace is working to certify the new product in their new and existing systems.  Kevin Hawley noted that they have not certified their systems with a new fluid type and that some work lies ahead.

CAV Aerospace announced that they have produced more than 6000 TKS Ice Protection Systems.  These systems range from small single engine piston airplanes to mid-sized business jets and unmanned aerial vehicles.   CAV’s President Kevin Hawley said that they are proud to serve their customers and to support our troops.

CAV also said they are working with Cirrus Aircraft to develop a FIKI (Flight Into Known Icing) TKS Ice Protection System for the 2009 Cirrus SR22 and Turbo Models.   They also announced that the full line of Corvalis Cessna singles is now eligible for a TKS retrofit.  More than 100 Corvalis 40TT’s are currently equipped with the system and now Corvalis 350 owners can have the system installed.  Kevin Hawley noted that the system can also be installed on the older Lancair and Columbia 300 aircraft.

"In other news", as we say in the business, CAV Aerospace revealed that he TKS Ice Protection system is available on the new Cessna Caravan 208B.  Kevin Hawley noted that there are now over 100 systems installed on Cessna Caravans and that the system “works very well.”, and that they have entered into a joint business development agreement with Kilfrost. These include marketing, advertising, web site promotion and trade show appearances.
