SMART-1 Flies Higher To Delay Crash Into Moon

ESA Scientists Want To See Impact

For the past 16 months, the ESA lunar probe SMART-1 has been circling the moon... gathering data and beaming it back to Earth. Now... European scientists and engineers are getting ready to send SMART-1 to its end with what's become a traditional bang-up ending... crashing the vehicle into the lunar surface.

But if that's going to happen... they want to at least have a chance to see it. There's just one problem. The way SMART-1 is orbiting the Moon now... it'll go down on the dark side of the lunar surface.

Well, if you're going to crash a multi-million dollar satellite on the moon... you'd want to see it, too, right?

So the ESA has changed SMART-1's orbit and velocity... extending the mission's finale from August 17 to September 3... and from the dark side of the moon, to the portion of the lunar surface that faces Earth.

It should be quite a show.
