Kiowa Down In Iraq, 2 KIA

Another Chopper Hit, Lands Safely

An armed OH-58 Kiowa recon helicopter was shot down, late Thursday, about 60 km North of Baghdad, near the city of Buhriz... known to be a former stronghold for Saddam Hussein. Another Kiowa was also hit but landed safely at a nearby airfield.

The crash occurred in the middle of a massive action against insurgents in Iraq, after the helo took fire and went down, killing both crewmembers on board. The remains of both crewmen have been recovered, according to military officials.

Both Kiowas were involved in Task Force Liberty, currently under the command of the 42nd Infantry Division, and headquartered in Tikrit. The action took place at approximately 2250 local time while supporting troops fighting insurgents near Baqouba, NE of Baghdad.
