Gone West: Boca Raton Airport Manager Ken Day

Had Been Hospitalized For An 'Undisclosed Illness'

The manager of Boca Raton Airport (KBCT) in Florida passed away last Sunday at Boca Raton Regional Hospital where he had been admitted for an "undisclosed illness."

Ken Day, 56, had been the airport manager at KBCT for 13 years, according to a report in the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Previously, he had managed Midland International Airport in Texas. His salary had been something of an issue for at least one member of the Boca Raton Airport Authority, who questioned whether he should be receiving $218,000 per year to manage an airport with 50,000 operations per year.

The questions came after sequestration threatened to close the airport's control tower, a threat that did not materialize when federal legislation gave the FAA the authority to move money between accounts and keep the contract towers open for this fiscal year. The seven controllers at the airport receive about $650,000 in salaries and benefits, according to the paper.

A Ken Day Scholarship Fund has been established to assist students further their aviation careers. Donations can be made to the Boca Raton Airport Authority.
