Air Pacific To Be Rebranded 'Fiji Airways'

Back To The Future As Airline Reverts To 1958 Name

Fiji's national air carrier, Air Pacific, has announced a return to its 1958 name – Fiji Airways – to better reflect its dedication to transporting travelers to and from Fiji. The official name change, complete with branding and the introduction of new aircraft, is expected to take place by June 2013.

Since 2009, Air Pacific, its Chairman, CEO, and numerous staff, have worked to stabilize, rebuild and improve the airline's entire infrastructure. Part of these enhancements include improving flight schedules and networks; investing in new aircraft and onboard products; enhancing the flying experience; and – most impressively – decreasing the operating loss that was handed down to current leadership by over FJD $88 million.

According to Air Pacific CEO Dave Pflieger, this announcement marks another important milestone among continuing efforts for the turnaround of Fiji's national carrier. Among these milestones are an increase in flights between Fiji and Sydney; partnerships with Singapore Airlines, Rolls Royce, Weber, and Panasonic to design three new Air Buses; a new airport lounge; and the modernisation of the airline's products and services.

These positive changes spearheaded by Air Pacific have received great support from the Fijian Government.

"This collaboration and vision sustains jobs, creates jobs, grows our economy, and positions Fiji as a destination for investors and holidaying," said Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama.

Pflieger said at the announcement: "Our airline is one of Fiji's largest companies employing 800 people directly and an estimated 8,000 or so indirectly, and we fly in over 60% of all visitors who come to Fiji, so it only makes sense for us to embrace our uniquely Fijian culture and spirit [and] characteristics which have seen Fiji consistently recognised by consumers as one of the world's friendliest countries and no doubt helped us win a recent award as one of the top ten small airlines in the world."

Fiji's global recognition as a luxurious and friendly vacation destination is supported by the nation's outstanding hospitality industry; pristine environment; diverse tourism attractions; and, of course, its people.

Over the next 18 months, Air Pacific passengers can expect to see the official Fiji Airways logo and brand mark; photos of the new layout and interior design of aircraft carriers; marketplace displays of the brand; and, of course, the arrival of the new Airbus airplanes.
