FAA Posts Drone Registration Database

Cities, States And Zip Codes Are The Only Data Released

In response to a large number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the FAA has posted online a large database listing the city, state and zip code of each registered drone owner in the United States.

Names and exact addresses of the registered users have not been disclosed because that information is exempt under the FOIA for privacy reasons.

sUAS News reports that the FAA determined that data made public should be limited because many of the registered drone operators are minors, hobbyists and recreational users. The FAA believes that the privacy concern outweighs any public interest in who owns a drone.

In remarks at AUVSI XPONENTIAl last week, FAA administrator Michael Huerta said that there are now more than 800,000 registered drones on the database, so sifting through the records will be a chore.

The database is downloadable from the FAA.
