U.S. Military Concerned About ISIS Use Of Bomber Drones

Small UAVs Dropping Bombs On Targets With Great Accuracy

ISIS has released a video showing how it can now use a small, commercially available drone to drop small bombs onto targets in and around Mosul in Iraq with a great deal of accuracy.

The video, released on social media, shows how ISIS can put together, arm, launch and control the drones to find specific targets. The Washington Times reports that, while the explosions appear to be small, they are accurate enough to be deadly. The drone operators were able to hit the center of a troop concentration and the turret of a tank in the video.

Representative Duncan Hunter (R-CA) told the paper that delivering IEDs by drone is a "natural progression for IEDs. We should have seen this coming," he said.

In a letter to Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee dated January 18, Eric Fanning, who was at the time Secretary of the Army, said that the jihadi drone threat is increasing. “These advances present our adversaries with opportunities to quickly adjust and improve their tactics, and the Army must remain adaptive and agile to respond to the evolving threat,” Fanning wrote.

Fanning said that the army is currently testing more than 20 programs developed by both the government and private industry to "detect, identify and electronically defeat" enemy unmanned aircraft.
