Logan, NYC to limit
flights to commercial airline service during convention
The Associated Press is reporting that the FAA has reached a
decision on flight traffic into and out of Logan International
Airport during the Democratic National Convention. No private or
corporate flights will be allowed at Logan during the convention
for security reasons.
FAA spokesperson Laura Brown said the restrictions will be
imposed from 7 AM on July 26 through midnight on July 29. The FAA
is issuing the restrictions at the request of the US Secret
Service, the agency responsible for security at the event.
Flights into and out of
Logan during those periods will be limited to commercial scheduled
airline traffic that meets security requirements. The same
restrictions will apply to a TFR that is expected to be put into
place on a radius of 10 miles around Logan. Private and corporate
flights, as well as other commercial traffic that does not meet
security requirements, will be allowed to operate within a 30 mile
radius. However, these aircraft will be required to file a
flight plan and land or take off at one of the airports outside the
10 mile radius around Logan.
General aviation flights, however, will not be allowed to take
off from those airports unless they are going to leave the 30-mile
radius, Brown said.
Additional restrictions
are expected to be put into place that will affect operations such
as part 135 charters and companies such as Cape Air, but neither
the FAA nor the TSA commented on what those restrictions may be.
Similar restrictions are expected to be put in place for the
Republican convention in New York City in late August and early
September.
