Bird Strike Forces Emergency Landing At Sacramento International

Hawaiian Airlines Aircraft Encountered Birds On Early-Morning Departure To Honolulu

A Hawaiian Airlines aircraft departing Sacramento International Airport en route to Honolulu Saturday morning was forced to make an emergency landing back at the airport after encountering a flock of birds on takeoff.

The Sacramento Bee report that the plane was departing at around 0700 local time when it encountered the birds, resulting in damage to the aircraft's right engine. Laurie Slothower, communication and media officer for Sacramento County Department of Airports, told the paper that the pilot declared an emergency and returned to the airport, where he landed safely.

There were no injuries to passengers or crew aboard the airplane, according to Slothower. All were accommodated on other flights, she said.

Sacramento is among the top airports in the nation for bird strikes, according to the report. Bird strikes have occurred as many as 200 times over the past 10 years, according to the report.
