Aero-TV At SnF21: From Props to Jets -- RevelAero’s Speedy Obsession

Unique Sport Aviation Platform Shows Off Curves At Sun ‘n Fun

Throughout sport aviation history, there have been a number of small jet-like aircraft designs that managed to get the attention of pilots all over the world. The BD-5J was among the most famous, or infamous, of the lot -- though the success of that project left much to be desired. BUT... the concept of a line of piston-to-jet hotrods, with a common basic airframe, has remained elusive despite the intense interest in the breed.

The latest to attempt to conquer this category is Jeff Kerlo’s RevelAero and a series of fixed and RG Pistons, as well as a single engine jet aircraft, ‘Voodoo’ with which he hopes to inspire a future racing class. The “affordable new jet class” that Kerlo is working toward would currently feature Voodoo and the SubSonex personal jet.

The carbon fiber kit is a fast build, which can go “buy to fly” in under a year, Kerlo said. With diligent effort, it could even be ready to compete in six months. The racing design would be powered by a PBS TJ100 jet engine, which could send it along at 320 mph.

For those who aren’t looking for gold in the newest racing class, Voodoo also comes in a piston-powered,  propeller-driven version. On the low end, it can cruise at 165 mph. With the increase to 150 hp, it could reportedly fly up to 260 mph.

Aero-TV is a production of the Internationally syndicated Aero-News Network.
