Qualcomm’s drone and robotics technologies reduce the on-board computing footprint while offering robust connectivity, advanced processing power and longer battery life. The company demonstrated two of its more recent developments at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Chad Sweet, Senior Director of Engineering for Qualcomm Research told ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell that the Snapdragon Oversight Drone takes video from two fisheye cameras and stitches them together in realtime into a spherical VR capture. The images can be streamed over wifi into VR headsets, Sweet said.
The company has also developed Visual Inertial Odometry, which allows the drones to use computer vision to track and hold their position, and fly in concert following a pre-programmed track with centimeter accuracy, he said.
Sweet said, among the uses for the technology are indoor navigation, which can be beneficial for an indoor security drone. The vision technology allows drones to fly higher than a traditional sonar system, that can help prevent "GPS Flyaways".
