Airborne 02.22.21: B777 Engine Failure, SnF DroneShow, Mars Video

Also: USCG Rescue, CAF Airbase Georgia, Cygnus Launch, Hillsboro Aero Academy

An elder B777-200 suffered an engine failure this past Saturday, leaving parts  along the flightpath used to return after declaring an emergency.

United Airlines Boeing 777-200, N772UA, was built in 1994 and on its way to Honolulu from Denver International. The catastrophic failure resulted in extensive damage to the engine housings and fairings... pieces of which were found in several locations along its return path over Broomfield, CO, to the Denver airport -- where the aircraft landed safely with no injuries to anyone on board. A major feature for this year’s Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo will be the first public drone light show performance at a Florida airshow. Over 60 of the specialized aerial robots will lift-off together, taking flight twice during the week-long event. Sun ‘n Fun organizers are confident that this dazzling multi-colored aerial light display set to music, dubbed the “Star Dance Spectacular,” will be one of this year’s most memorable highlights. “Drones are the latest in aviation technology, and it’s exciting to have a display like this to showcase just one of the incredible uses for them,” said Greg Gibson, CMO and Airshow Director for Sun ‘n Fun. New video from NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover has chronicled the intense but major milestones during the final minutes of its entry, descent, and landing (EDL) on the Red Planet on Feb. 18. The spacecraft plummeted, parachuted, and rocketed toward the surface of Mars, while a microphone on the rover also has provided the first audio recording of sounds from Mars. From the moment of parachute inflation, the camera system covers the entirety of the descent process, showing some of the rover’s intense ride to Mars’ Jezero Crater. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
