One Dead, One Hurt In Sailplane Midair

One Able To Parachute Near Melbourne, Australia

One pilot is dead, another injured, after their sailplanes collided about 3500 feet over the Australian town of Dookie North, about 100 miles north of Melbourne, Australia.

It happened at around 1600 Sunday. Authorities say the wing of one glider apparently impacted the wing of another, causing both to plummet toward the ground. One pilot, in his 50s, was able to parachute to relative safety, sustaining a broken arm in the process. He was rushed to a local hospital where he's in stable condition.

The other pilot, about 10 years older, was unable to escape the aircraft as it plunged toward the ground. The wreckage of the two gliders was found less than a half-mile apart in a meadow.

Both pilots were reportedly members of the Gliding Club of Victoria, based in Benalla. Both were described as very skilled and well-liked within the local glider community. So far, the names of the victims have not been released.
