Airborne 03.13.24: We Fly Deltahawk!, Kite Magnetics eTrainer, Pulsejet!

Also: FAA's New Budget, EUTELSAT Via BelugaST, SnF Warbirds, 2025 World Games Drone Race

ANN had an exceptional opportunity this week, with a chance to get a little operational experience flying an aircraft equipped with the Deltahawk DHK180 aviation diesel engine. The flight down from Racine, WI, the day before, covered a total of 818 NM, at an average 148 Kts True Airspeed and a total fuel burn of 45 gallons of Jet A -- nonstop. CKD Aero has partnered up with Kite Magnetics to create the Dakota e-Hawk, the “world’s most cost-effective two-seat electric aircraft”. The e-Hawk is intended to be the first in a lineup of kit aircraft using Kite’s KM-60 electric engine and running gear. The KM-60 is much like an o

ANN Flies The Deltahawk Diesel

Recent Trip Covered A Total Of 818 Nm, At An Average 148 Kts True Airspeed And A Total Fuel Burn Of 45 Gallons Of Jet A

ANN had an exceptional opportunity this week, with a chance to get a little operational experience flying an aircraft equipped with the Deltahawk DHK180 aviation diesel engine. The experience was fascinating... and keep in mind that the aircraft we flew was an experimental test vehicle with a prototype engine in an airplane that was normally equipped with 30 more horsepower than what was listed for the DHK180 -- and we didn't seem to be missing it much. So... solid data is yet to come... and will have to wait until the engine matures to a production version... which shouldn't be long now.

NATA Chapped at Biden Tax Proposals

5x Increase in Jet Fuel Tax Pops Eyeballs at NATA

The NATA (National Air Transportation Association) is unhappy with some of the general aviation tax provisions published in the White House's FY2025 Budget -- as they should be. The group put out a statement regarding President Biden's budget plans, pointing out the beneficial effects of general aviation on the economic landscape. The most distressing aspect of the change would be an increase to the jet fuel tax, which would add up to a 500% increase over a 5-year ramp-up span. Looking back, NATA even checked on a similar change in the past, when a tax shift removed billions of dollars from the Airport and Airways Trust Fund to the Highway Trust Fund. Even one small change ultimately carved aw

United to Pause Hiring, Too

Boeing's Failed Delivery Schedule Continues to Impact Wider Industry

United Airlines will similarly pause pilot hiring like its Boeing-family companion Southwest, citing the continued delivery delays from the manufacturer. United won't be expanding its fleet as planned, leaving it with a large, swollen pilot base following its hiring bonanza in 2021 and beyond. Now that the industry has filled up a lot of seats, carriers feel they have enough personnel to weather through the rest of the year, even accounting for attrition. United Airlines' VP of flight operations Mar Champion said that new hire classes would be paused in May and June, possibly to resume sometime in July.

Barnstorming: The Aviation World--A Demonstration of Well-Organized Chaos Theory

A Plan, Of Sorts, Has Been Brewing For Quite A While... And I Think It May Be Time To Act

By ANN/CEO Jim Campbell... With Inspiration From The Thousands Of Amazing Aviators Who Have Shaped My Life What an intriguing, if conflicting, few weeks... I came home, several weeks ago, from a Veteran Cemetery after a dear friend lost his wife of nearly 60 years... so we endured the sadness while in a beautiful location dedicated to the memory of those whose hopes and dreams once served our nation so well... and as such, it was hard not to be pretty introspective on the quiet ride home. I spent most of it telling my dear wife Masako, of countless, now departed friends, with whom I shared so much and still, to th

As The Airplane Reached Mid-Field, It Made A Climbing Right Turn Over The Trees And Disappeared From The Camera View

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (03.13.24)

“During last week’s State of the Union address, President Biden spoke passionately about our country’s freedom, future possibilities, and job growth—all attributes fostered by our essential industry. Rather than singling out general aviation, the Administration’s first priority should be creating and preserving an environment in which aviation continues to facilitate business growth and contributes to the national economy. NATA opposes such an increase in fuel taxes for these private, noncommercial operators. In addition, we are concerned that the Biden Administration is failing to account for the billions of business aviation tax dollars that are diverted from the Airport and Airways Trust Fund (AATF) into the Highway Trust Fund (HTF). Such di
