Missing UN-Chartered Caravan Found In Uganda

Flying For UN World Food Programme

After more than a week of reconnaisance that involved long, dangerous hikes into Uganda's Mountains of the Moon, search teams have reached the wreckage of a Cessna Caravan that went down on April 28, finding the bodies of all three people on board.

As Aero-News reported last week, the Caravan (file photo of type, right) had been leased out from King Air Charter Services by the UN's World Food Program for a flight from the Congolese town of Goma to Bunia in the northeastern part of that country.

The wreckage was located by a UN helicopter at an elevation of 11,700 feet, but there was no place to land. Officials with the Ugandan Civil Aviation Authority told CBC those teams then had to go in on foot... braving the severe weather and almost impossible terrain.

There's no indication of why the plane went down. Authorities have confirmed the pilot and his wife, who was also aboard the aircraft, were South African, and the copilot carried French-Canadian citizenship. Their names haven't yet been released.
