FAA Helicopter Examiner Fatally Injured In Training Accident

Student Was Airlifted To A Worcester, MA Hospital

A helicopter accident in Boxboro, MA, Wednesday fatally injured  57-year-old Mike Wheeler of Watertown, NY, an FAA Helicopter Designated Examiner.

The accident occurred when the 40- year-old student, who's name is being withheld by authorities, reportedly was taking her final check ride required to become an instructor. She was unable to restart the engine of the Schweitzer 269C following a simulated engine-out procedure. The CFI candidate told rescuers that she and the inspector tried to land in a clear area, but came down in the trees instead.

There are conflicting reports as to where the flight originated, but the helicopter was registered to Blue Hill Helicopters, a flight school in Norwood, MA, according to multiple media reports including The Boston Herald and WBZ-TV.

The woman was reportedly conscious and talking when she was taken from the helicopter and transported to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
