Free STEM Event Coming To Lakeland

Lakeland's ACE & 'Air Race Classic' Host STEM Aviation Event For Females

Sun n Fun’s Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) in conjunction with 2022 Air Race Classic (ARC) participants will host a free girls only STEM aviation education event for those aged 11-18, on 18 Jun 2022 from 1:00-3:00pm CDT. The event will be held in the Skylab Innovation Center at Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) in Florida. Only 60 spots are available, so don’t delay your registration!

At the event, attendees will have an opportunity to meet two teams from the 2022 ARC, track the racers, move and engage with others during a scavenger hunt, get hands-on time in a Redbird Flight Simulator, fly a drone, and also learn about the Weather Service. Team #33 ‘The Lady Aces’ members are Richele Floyd (ACE Scholarship Director and pilot), Kaitlin Conway (student pilot), and Jensen Dix (student pilot navigator); Team #38 “The Red Eagles” are from Polk State College with Autumn Richarz and Emma Otmer, both serving as pilots.

The Air Race Classic in effect since 1929, is a four-day 2000+ mile cross country race which, this year, will originate at LAL on 21 June 2022 and terminate at Terre Haute (HUF) in Indiana on 24 June. Media is encouraged to participate, but should register through Joni Fisher (see FMI link) no later than 1 June 2022, so their “security hoops” are cleared for accessing the facility.
