Pilot Fatally Injured In Accident At Central Florida Airport

Piper PA-12 Went Down In The Grass At Orlando-Sanford International Airport

The pilot of a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser was fatally injured Saturday when the airplane went down on the grounds of Orlando-Sanford International Airport. The plane reportedly went down in a grassy area on the airport, and a post-impact fire ensued.

Television station WFTV reports that the pilot of the aircraft was 55-year-old Thomas Camman, who had been a long-term tenant at the airport.

The president of the airport, Diane Crews, told the station that Camman was taking the Super Cruiser on its first flight following a recent restoration. She said that the plane appeared to stall shortly after takeoff.

The accident forced the closure of two runways used for private and corporate aircraft until the initial investigation was completed Sunday, according to the report. However, normal operations at the airport were maintained, according to officials.

Camman was the only person on board the airplane when it went down. No other injuries were reported.
