Canadian Pilot In Nashville Accident Had Checkered Past

Authorities Say He May Have Been Trying To Reach Mexico When His Cessna Went Down At KBNA

The investigation of an accident which occurred in Nashville, TN two months ago has turned up some new information about the pilot of the Cessna 172 which went down on a runway at KBNA two months ago. The destroyed plane sat on the runway for several hours before being noticed by another pilot landing at the airport.

The Cessna pilot, identified as Michael Callan, had been arrested in 1997 for a series of robberies in Windsor, Canada and sentenced to a 10-year prison term, according to a report from television station WTVF.

He remained in Canada for a few years after being released from prison and had been arrested again in 2011 in a pornography sting. While the pornography charges were dropped, he still had charges pending for disturbing the peace. Authorities said had Callan been convicted of charges, he might have gone back to prison.

Canadian authorities say it's possible that Callan rented the plane and deviated from his flight plan, crossing the border and heading south, in an attempt to reach Mexico where he felt he could escape his legal troubles. The plane went down in a dense fog in Nashville, resulting in his fatal injury. The NTSB is still looking into the cause of the accident, and how the wreckage managed to go unnoticed on the runway of a major airport for several hours.
