Student Helicopter Pilot Does Not Survive Accident

Helo Went Down Northern California On Cross-Country Flight

A helicopter went down last Friday in a remote area of northern California, fatally injuring the aircraft's 51-year-old student pilot. The student, who has not yet been identified pending notification of relatives, was on a solo cross-country flight between Hayfork (F62) and Weaverville (O54) airports.

The Eureka, CA Times-Standard reports that the Trinity County Sheriff's office mounted a search Friday afternoon when the Brantly B-2 C/N 181 helicopter failed to land back at Hayfork as scheduled. The FAA was notified at that time, and an overdue aircraft procedure was instituted.

Authorities said the helicopter was located by using the pilot's cell phone to triangulate its locale. It went down three miles outside Weaverville off a remote dirt road in an area known as Democrat Gulch.
