Aero-TV At SnF 2022: Flight Design’s New F2

Flight Design’s F2 CS23 Passes EASA Certification Now Awaiting FAA Approval

Speaking with Tom Peghiny, President of Flight Design USA about the Flight Design F2 currently working its way through FAA certification.

The F2 CS23 was awarded a type certificate by the European Aviation Safety Administration in December 2021, and an application was made with EASA to submit that data package to the FAA for a process that’s called “validation” where they review the data package and decide what will be required for full Part 23 (Level 1) certification in the United States.

In terms of new developments or changes since the application, Mr. Peghiny alluded to “small details” that they’re working on, but they’re focused on the day-night VFR and currently testing the equipment for full IFR flight in IMC. The Russian-Ukraine hostilities is of particular concern to Flight Design because it has a manufacturing facility in Ukraine; currently the good news is that the factory is still intact, the bad news is that it’s in Kherson which is an occupied area of Ukraine. They’re hoping for the best and planning for the worst. They’ve started the process of building up production capability in the Czech Republic where their prototype work and where the EASA production organization is based, so Flight Design already has a foothold there.

They’ve built airplanes in Czech Republic and have many vendors in the Czech Republic, so they are in the process of making new tooling to begin making F2’s both the LSA and the CS 23 certified version in Sumperk. Flight Design hopes to get its factory back intact, and is thankful that as of 8th April 2022, most of their people are fine. Mr. Peghiny adds “that’s the most important thing, you can make new molds, you can get another building, but you can’t replace your friends or the people you love.”
