Organizers Cite Other Events, Lack Of Hotel Rooms
The Aviation Expo has shifted its dates by a week so that more hotel rooms will be available in Palm Springs. And, the event has been moved from the Convention Center to a hangar at Palm Springs International Airport -- a decision that is raising questions in light of the comfort factor inherent on the warmer days known to come to the PSP area.
The alleged reason is a busy season of events in Palm Springs in October. A mega-music festival called Desert Trip is scheduled for the weekend of October 13, which is the same weekend that the aviation expo had been planned. Hotel rooms were so jammed for the music festival that the aviation expo organizers reportedly decided to move their event to October 20-22, when more rooms are available.
The venue, which hasn't exactly pulled significant attendance in its first two outings, had to be changed because another event was already planned at the convention center on the new dates for the aviation expo. So now, the airplanes and vendors will set up in a hangar and outdoor displays at the airport. Tom Nolan, executive director of the Palm Springs airport, told The Desert Sun newspaper that there is 50,000 square feet in hangars and outdoor space available to accommodate the event, and arrangements are reportedly being made for mobile air conditioners to help alleviate the desert heat that is normal at that time of the year.
Organizers say that the "parade of planes" ... reportedly one of the event's signature events (copied from the AOPA rendition)... will also take place at the airport.
