EAA Canadian Council Briefs Transport Canada On SP/LSA

Initial Feedback: Supportive

Representatives of EAA's Canadian Council are among those meeting this week with Transport Canada officials in Ottawa, Ontario, to discuss integrating sport pilot/light-sport aircraft regulations with Canadian aircraft regulations. Those present for the two-day meeting (December 7-8) included Council Chairman G. Denis Browne along with members Jack Dueck, Herb Cunningham, and Frank Hofmann.

Dueck, who also serves on the EAA Homebuilt Aircraft Council, provided PowerPoint overview presentations on light-sport aircraft and sport pilots. Other presenters on behalf of sport pilot included ASTM's Dan Schulz, who provided an overview on how the standards-creating organization works internationally; and Chris Heinz, retired president of Zenair Ltd., who provided information about ASTM consensus standards for the manufacture of LSAs.

Dueck's preliminary report indicates good overall support for parts of the LSA regulations, with some concerns expressed over instructor requirements and maintenance issues. He'll provide an update with more information when he returns home to Calgary later in the week.
