Qatar Airline Pilot Dies During Flight

Flight From Manila Was Diverted To Malaysia

The captain of a Qatar Airways flight passed away during a flight from the Philippines, the airline reported Wednesday.

Fox News reports that the incident happened aboard flight 645 between Manila and the Qatari capital of Doha. Air traffic controllers diverted the flight to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. It landed safely about 1135 local time, where a new crew was brought on board to continue the flight to Doha.

No official explanation for the pilots' death was given, but the Arabic news service al Jazeera reports that it was apparently a heart attack.

In a statement, Qatar airways would only say that its main concern "remains the comfort and safety of its passengers and staff." The aircraft was landed by the co-pilot, and the airline also did not say whether the aircraft was ever at risk.
