The Invention Of 'Practical' Flight

Wright Brothers' Fans Getting Ready To Celebrate

The flight lasted just over 39-minutes, but some contend it was the real beginning of manned aviation. Far from Kitty Hawk, NC, aviation enthusiasts are celebrating what many believe was the true beginning of aviation -- Wilbur Wright's 1905 flight over Huffman Prairie, OH.

It's an important distinction to some. While the Wright brothers made four flights on December 17th, 1903, they felt none was truly controlled flight. They returned to their home in Ohio to develop a more maneuverable aircraft.

It was almost two years later, on Huffman Prairie, they tested their improvements.

Wilbur was at the controls. He circled the pasture at 38 miles an hour, then ran out of fuel. Wilbur landed without incident, proving that aviation was "practical."
