Air Traffic Controller Tells Police He Smokes Meth To Stay Awake

Was Arrested For A Traffic Violation Last Week In New York State

When police in Long Island, New York stopped 52-year-old Breen Peck for illegal window tinting and failure to signal, they discovered a lot more than just traffic violations.

Peck, an air traffic controller in New York, was carrying two loaded handguns in his vehicle, and had meth in his pants pockets.

The New York Post relays a report from Newsday which said that according to court documents, Peck, who has been an FAA employee since 1991, said he smoked the meth to stay awake on the job.

Peck had been involved in an incident in April, 2011 in which a plane carrying First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Jill Biden on approach to Joint Base Andrews was allowed to get too close to the wake turbulence from a military cargo plane, according to The Washington Post. The pilot of the White House plane reportedly aborted the landing.

A year prior, he had been directing a United Airlines flight that nearly collided with a smaller jet that had a Wisconsin Congressman as a passenger. The pilot of the United flight reportedly said "That was close."

Peck faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, as well as several violations of vehicle and traffic laws. He is being held in lieu of $12,00 cash or $25,000 bond, according to the New York Post.
