Greenpeace Executive's Commute Leaves Large Carbon Footprint

Flies 250 Miles To Work Twice Each Month

Greenpeace has long advocated against air travel for the damage they claim it does to the environment. But one of the group's top executives finds it necessary to fly some 250 miles to work at least twice a month.

The executive is Pascal Husting, the groups International Program Director. The U.K. newspaper The Telegraph reports that he is making the round trip between Luxembourg and Amsterdam twice a month since he took the job in 2012.

And Greenpeace is footing the bill for the trips.

According to KLM, the airline that Husting generally flies, each flight between the two cities generates about 142 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. That makes the flights taken by Husting responsible for about 7.4 metric tons of C02 emissions ... or the equivalent of burning about 17 barrels of oil, according to the U.S. EPA.

Husting said that, while he would rather not fly, the trip would take six hours each way by train, and that he does a great deal of work for the organization on Skype and video conference calls.

He said in September, he'd be cutting back to one trip per month, and that would be done on the train.
