Madrid Airport Operations Disrupted By Drone Sighting

Was Closed For Nearly An Hour On February 3

For over an hour on Monday, February 3, Madrid's international airport was closed after a reported drone sighting.

The Associated Press reports that, according to a Tweet from airport operator AENA, 26 flights had been diverted to other airports by the time air traffic restrictions were lifted at 2:15 p.m. local time.

Spain's Transport Ministry closed the airspace around Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport in Madrid after Spain’s air navigation authority  Enaire reported the possible presence of drones in the area.

Two pilots reported seeing drones near the airport, which is located to the east of the center of the city. After the reports, Enaire put procedures in place to stop all operations at the airport and divert incoming flights.

Suárez-Barajas airport in Madrid handles an average of 1,200 flights per day.
