Focus Air Achieves Certification

Startup Carrier Obtains Prized Certificate

Focus Air, a startup freight carrier, has achieved air carrier certification. The company was awarded its air carrier certificate under Part 121, Supplement K, this week.

Focus has acquired four Boeing 747-200F and 747-300SF freighters and expects to operate them on international air cargo routes under ACMI lease. (For those Aero-News readers new to air cargo, "ACMI" is a standard wet lease term -- meaning Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance are provided by the lessor).

Focus managers prize the 747 because of its fuel efficiency, ease of cargo handling, and brute lifting capacity: the 747-200 can lift 110,000 metric tons of cargo. They intend to add 747-400 variants relatively soon.

Focus will develop the three-pilot crews for its "classic" 747s in house, at least to some degree. Focus is headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
