USCG MH-60 Assists Overdue 2 Fishermen And Dog In Cochrane Bay, Alaska

Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter Crew Hoisted The Two Fishermen And Their Dog

The Coast Guard assisted two fishermen and a dog today, after their 21-foot skiff became disabled in Cochrane Bay, Alaska.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the two fishermen and their dog from the beach at approximately 6 a.m. and transported them to the Whittier Airport.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders were notified at approximately 3 a.m. of the overdue vessel from the wife of one of the fishermen. They left for a shrimping trip on Tuesday and were supposed to be back within 24 hours.

The vessel owner reported his radio was out of commission and unable to do any call outs to report their vessel had become stranded.

“Fortunately, the fishermen had a float plan established with a loved one who notified the Coast Guard when they became overdue,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyler Post, a command center watchstander for Sector Anchorage.  “We want to stress the importance of carrying multiple forms of communication and of letting people know where you are going on the water.”

There were no reports of injuries or pollution. On scene weather at the time of rescue included an air temperature of 50 degrees, 15 mph winds and 10 mile visibility.

The owner of the vessel is making plans to salvage the vessel.
