FAA Approves $6.19 Million For The Project
The FAA has approved a $6.19 million AIP grant for a taxiway

Committee chair John Mica (R-FL).

“Projects like this are essential to spur economic
development in our local community,” Mica said in a news
release. “Transportation improvements, like this project,
will create jobs and will provide improved access to and from
Northeast Florida.”
According to the Northeast Florida Regional Airport website, the
southern phase of the project will finish the only complete
parallel taxiway associated with Primary Runway 13/31. The project
is preparing Environmental Permitting Applications for submittal
relative to this effort as it has significant intrusion into the
adjacent saltwater tidal marsh area. The northern phase of the
project was scheduled to be completed late this month.
“This grant helps the Northeast Florida Regional Airport
accomplish its long-term goals,” said Ed Wuellner, Executive
Director of the airport. “I would like to thank
Congressman Mica for his continued support of the airport and St.
Johns County.”
The FAA grant to improve the runway safety area covers 95
percent of the project’s cost which will bring the taxiway to
federal standards. Additionally, the project will help stop
erosion from an adjacent marsh. The project is slated to
start within two to three weeks after the grant is processed. The
construction timeline is expected to last six months.
