'Rare Bear' Going To New Owner

Plane's Builder Sells After 37 Years

While engine trouble kept it out of contention at this year's Reno Air Races, it's a safe bet the modified Grumman F8F Bearcat "Rare Bear" will once again grace the skies over Stead Field next year. But Number 77 will be in the hands of a new owner.

Aero-News has learned Lyle Shelton -- who brought Rare Bear to life in 1969, starting from the derelict wreckage of an F8F abandoned by the side of an Indiana cornfield --  has agreed to sell his cherished racer to Rod Lewis. Lewis will also take ownership of The Rare Bear Air Race Team.

"We have been blessed with the most loyal fans that any race team could ask for!" The Rare Bear Team states on its website. "Those of you who have supported our racing efforts with your memberships in the Rare Bear Fan Sponsor Club over the last few years have made the success of this race team possible."

Powered by a 4,000+ horsepower Wright R3350 powerplant -- just a little more than the plane originally came with -- the Rare Bear last won at Reno in 2005, where it captured first place in the Unlimited Gold category with a speed of 470.765 mph.

"Rod Lewis and The Rare Bear Air Race Team will bring the airplane to the next level of competition," the team says. "Rod Lewis will continue to honor the great legacy Lyle has built throughout these years."
