Continental Pilot Aborts Takeoff At LAS

Blows Tires Out Following Engine Trouble

A Continental Airlines Boeing 757-300 (file photo of type, below) bound for New Jersey aborted takeoff at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas Monday, and blew out several tires in the resulting hard stop.

Several tires burst when the pilot abruptly brought the aircraft to a halt on the runway, after receiving a warning of an engine thrust problem about 3:00 pm. Officials told the Associated Press there were no injuries reported among the 223 people on board.

Continental spokeswoman Mary Clark said no other flights were affected and passengers were provided alternate flights to Newark.

This isn't the only recent incident of exploding tires in Vegas. An Air Canada A320 skidded to a stop on a runway at LAS with blown tires and subsequent engine damage during acceleration on March 12. Pilots reported brake issues in that case.
