Aero-TV: Avionics Tip of the Week - Avidyne R9, Integrated Flight Deck

In the third part of his four part series, Glover discusses the architecture of Release 9's Integrated Flight Displays (IFDs), built to enhance reliability and provide better mission readiness. The dual-architecture allows each display to perform the functions of the other, ensuring full redundancy with no need for special "reversionary" modes.

Instead of being "daisy-chained," each display has its own set of computational modules allowing for peer-to-peer data exchange and comparison. If a single-point failure occurs, components can be turned off during flight; this prevents the single-point failure from affecting other critical operations that can lead to an overall system failure.

In addition, if a component requires maintenance, the system quickly and effectively identifies the line-replaceable unit (LRU). Due to the IFD's modular design, the LRU can be easily pulled for repairs or replacement without need for reconfiguration or calibration.
